It's really hard sometimes to remember that these students have different home lives than I had and trying to find a way to get through to them with something they ARE interested in or DO care about. Cult of Pedagogy (blog), and 5. edutopia (email subscription). <br /><br />Back-to-school tips that I have for new teachers is to not sweat the small stuff and if you feel like you need help, make sure to ask for it...do not isolate yourself in your classroom.<br /><br />A challenging teaching experience I have had was realizing that for one particular student one morning, my bellwork assignment was the least important thing he was dealing when I found out his father had beaten his mother so badly, she was in a coma in the hospital and his father had been arrested. My student had gotten up on his own, gotten ready, and made it to school.
